Editor's Review

For my products to stand out and thus keep my customers always coming back for me, my quality needs to also be top-notch - Caroline

In our segment, Hustle Mtaani, Nairobi Leo sat down with Caroline Mwangi, the proprietor behind Flavour N' Spice to understand the growth of her business in the Kenyan market.

Here is the full interview of how Flavour N' Spice was born and the progress:

Describe your business?

The idea of Flavour N' Spice came up in late 2020 from my love of fermentation and healthy eating. I currently have two products that I'm working on, that is fermented chilli and low sugar jam.

How did you start your business?

Before thinking of turning it into a business, I used to share my products with friends and family. Their positive comments led me to think that I could very easily turn my passion into a business.

How has the progress and growth of your enterprise been like?

Branching out into a wider market has taught me one very important lesson, never skimp on quality and you will always have customers coming back for more. Despite the fact that 2020 was a tough year to start a business, I have seen growth albeit it being baby step, but we all start from somewhere, don't we?

What challenges have you encountered?

Fruits are seasonal, that has been my greatest challenge. I have integrated other fruits into my repertoire but there are clients who are die-hard fans of a fruit that is in a season for probably 2 months.

What lessons have you learned?

Consistency in quality is key when it comes to condiments. For my products to stand out and thus keep my customers always coming back for me, my quality needs to also be top-notch. There are no two ways about it.

What does the future hold for your business?

I see growth, I aspire to venture out and have various chilli blends, from fruity blends to spicy dips and spreads, while also having jams become a household staple to all and sundry.

What message do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Don't give up. We always have a truckload of excuses hindering us from stepping out. Could be you think that the market is saturated with the same idea as you, regardless of how meagre you think your capital is, no matter how noble your idea could be, so long as you have that inward drive pushing you to do something, just do it.
