The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODC) has urged Kenyans to be careful when engaging with Worldcoin.

In a statement on Friday, July 28, ODPC said that Worldcoin is processing sensitive personal data and it requires proper safeguards.

“The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) calls for increased vigilance from the public as it continues to engage with Worldcoin, an entity processing activities of iris data through an Orb, to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act, 2019.

“The ODPC is aware that Worldcoin has now been launched and is processing sensitive personal data in a manner that requires a demonstration of proper safeguards under the Data Protection Act, 2019,” the statement read in part.

The ODC also asked Kenyans to request for proper information from Worldcoin before disclosing their personal data.

“Kenyans are urged to ensure that they receive proper information before disclosing any personal or sensitive data. Individuals are advised to thoroughly inquire about how their data will be used,” ODC stated.

Worldcoin creates a unique identity by scanning the iris of its users with an orb camera. After creating an account users have access to the Worldcoin wallet used for cryptocurrency buying and selling.
