The Kibra MP is credited with developing top footballing talent in the country including; Dennis Oliech, Michael Olunga, McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama among others.

The 2022 Kenyan general election saw the exit of some of the country's renowned politicians, as a new crop of leaders was given the mandate to serve until the next polls are held.

A good example was in Kibra where former MP Imran Okoth was shown the door and veteran teacher Peter Orero was elected on an ODM Party ticket.

While Orero is known for his great work in the academic field, not many know that he also performed amazingly well in nurturing sports talent in the country, especially in football.

The Kibra MP is credited with developing top footballing talent in the country including; Dennis Oliech, Michael Olunga, McDonald Mariga, and Victor Wanyama among others.

While serving as a high school principal across several schools in Nairobi, Orero made it his business to ensure students are not only empowered academically but also talent-wise.

In the different schools he served, Orero ensured there was a pitch and a well coordinated programme on different sporting activities.

From 1990, Orero was privileged to serve at Kamukunji High School, Upper Hill, Lang'ata, and Dagoretti which were then prime grounds for footballing talent in the country.

Under his leadership, the schools managed to spot and nurture the football careers of players who eventually turned up to be spectacular talents locally and abroad.

Some of the footballers who passed by Orero's hands include; former Harambee Stars captains; Dennis Oliech, McDonald Mariga, Victor Wanyama, and Michael Olunga.

Other top players who were developed by Orero include; Andrew Oyombe, Jamal Mohammed, George Odhiambo, Francis Odhiambo, Geoffrey Kokoyo, and Francis Ocholla among others.

His track record in nurturing talent saw him recognised and appointed chair of the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association.

Apart from football, Orero also played a tremendous role in the development of basketball and netball talents across the country.

He reportedly took several schools to national and regional finals as part of the coaching team.

Some of the high profile sporting positions he has occupied include; Secretary General of Nairobi Basketball Association, national netball team coach, and a coach of the Teachers Service Commission football team for over 10 years.

Kenyans are hopeful that as MP, he will even continue nurturing talent and empowering Kibra youth who are talented in various sporting activities.
