Editor's Review

  • The projects were launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta as part of his legacy.
  • The projects are meant to better the lives of Kenyans in general.

The year 2020 has seen Kenya undergo various transformations under infrastructure. Most of the notable infrastructure development projects have been launched with keen monitoring of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Here are the five projects that stood out in 2020

The Nairobi Expressway

The Nairobi Expressway seeks to ease traffic congestion on Mombasa road. The 27.1km road begins at Mlolongo to JKIA, Nairobi’s CBD, and ends at Westlands along Waiyaki Way. The road launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to end in December 2022. The elevated road will have two traffic lanes in either direction and will feature 10 interchanges, with a considerable portion of the expressway being elevated.

Likoni Floating Bridge

The 175 meters long bridge will benefit about 300,000 Likoni ferry users. The bridge opened in mid-December has a 150-meter long movable part, right at the middle, which is opened and closed to allow for ships to pass through to and from the Mombasa port.

Kisumu port

The Kisumu port is a key project aimed at enabling easy cargo movement across the region. As of 2020, the port had taken shape witnessing a 62% increase in cargo. The port had for close to three decades been hit by a number of factors, including a dilapidated railway infrastructure and impassable and persistent invasion water hyacinth as well as boundary disputes that have turned the freshwater lake into a liability.

Railway upgrade

The Kenya Railway has revamped the railway system across the country. The Nairobi commuter train is the biggest stand out project that seeks to ease traffic congestion in the city. Additionally, the agency has carried out renovation of railway lines across the country in a bid to facilitate transport.

Affordable housing

Within three years, the first phase of affordable housing has taken shape. The Ngara apartment blocks are already open for sale. The low-cost houses consist of 546 three-bedroom units of 60 square metres selling at Sh3.55 million. There are also 260 three-bedroom units measuring 80 square metres each selling at Sh4 million each.
