In August 2022, Stephen Mburu made headlines after he was sworn in as Murang'a's third deputy governor, making him one of the youngest elected political leaders in the country.
The move earned Governor Irungu Kang'ata praise for selecting a youth as his deputy, but interestingly, Mburu was not the first choice for the county boss.
Governor Kang'ata had initially selected Dr Winfred Mwangi, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
However, it later emerged that Dr Mwangi had not resigned from her job within the speculated timelines, prompting Governor Kang'ata's competitors to file petitions challenging his lineup.
Kang'ata held on to his nominee (Dr Mwangi) until the very last day for submission of names, when he decided to change and have another running mate.

It is at this point that the governor settled on Mburu; a native of Karega village in Gatanga constituency.

Prior to his nomination, Mburu had served as an Assistant County Commissioner from 2019 until 2021 when he resigned to contest a ward seat which he unsuccessfully lost doing the primaries.
"Just when I was wondering what and where next, God came, scooped me up, and landed me safely over my uncertainties," Mburu revealed.
As a youthful leader and having served as a member of the provincial administration in the county, Mburu says he's conversant with the challenges facing the area and notes that one of his main priorities will be to advocate for youth affairs.
