  • Mutura will be replaced following Sonko's Thursday impeachment.
  • The event was supposed to take place on Friday.

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura has be sworn in as the interim city governor.

Mutura takes over the seat following Mike Sonko’s December 17 impeachment.

The event was conducted at around 10 am after being postponed from last week Friday.

“It is notified for information of the general public that the swearing-in ceremony of Benson Mutura as the governor of Nairobi City County shall take place on December 21, 2020, at the Nairobi County Government Headquarters starting 10 am,” says a Gazette Notice whose undersigned is the chairperson of the Assumption of the Office of the County Governor Committee, Justus Kathenge.

Mutura will be in charge of county affairs for 60 days, after which the IEBC will conduct a by-election.

The electoral board has to hold the mini-election because Nairobi County, as of the time of Sonko’s ouster, had no sitting Deputy Governor.

Sonko was impeached following a senate popular voted. Twenty-seven (27) out of 45 senators last Thursday voted to impeach Sonko on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, committing crimes under the national law.
