Mutura noted that he is keen to end the budget impasse in the county and work with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to ensure residents of the city get services.

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura has today been sworn in as the acting Nairobi Governor for the next 60 days.

His inauguration came about following a Senate decision to uphold the impeachment of Mike Sonko by the Nairobi County Assembly.

Speaking after his inauguration, Mutura promised Nairobians that he’ll restore sanity in the city and make it great again.

He further noted that he is keen to end the budget impasse in the county and work with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to ensure residents of the city get services.

"You have elected me to various positions in the city and I have never failed you. This will not be the first time," he said.

Mutura will be at the helm of the county for the next 60 days after which a by-election will be held to elect the new Nairobi Governor.

It is important to note that Sonko can still move to court and challenge the impeachment, thereby altering the 60-day period indicated in the Constitution if he gets a favourable ruling.

Meanwhile, a number of candidates have come out expressing interest in becoming the next Nairobi Governor.

Some of the notable names include; Dennis Waweru, Miguna Miguna, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru among others.
