Renowned Kenyan lawyer Ahmednasir Abdulahi has weighed in on the upcoming Nairobi Gubernatorial by-election noting that he is surprised by ODM party’s decision not to contest for the seat.

In a tweet, the Senior Counsel noted that the move was ‘stunning’ as Nairobi County is a key battleground for ODM and Jubilee.

“Stunning that ODM isn't contesting the vacant Nairobi Governor seat...Stunning! Obviously Msambweni has traumatised the party, he tweeted.

Reacting to the tweet, top city lawyer Donald Kipkorir noted that ODM has been enjoying Jubilee’s support in the past by-elections, adding that it is only fair that the party replicates in Nairobi where Jubilee held the gubernatorial seat before Mike Sonko’s impeachment.

“The ruling wing of Jubilee has never put up candidates against ODM in all by-elections since March 2018 in seats ODM was defending ... -ODM isn’t defending Nairobi Governor’s seat ... I don’t understand why you gloss over open facts for brownie points with your stillborn UDA!” Kipkorir posted.

On Wednesday, ODM chairman John Mbadi confirmed that the party was in talks with Jubilee to field a joint candidate where the latter will have the governor and the former deputy governor.

He, however, noted that the official lineup is yet to be agreed upon.

“I can confidently say that our discussions are around having our partners producing a gubernatorial candidate… We have so far shared on the phone with Jubilee on our plans and we will make the final communication in due course,” Mbadi said.
