  • EACC clears Mike Sonko after saying impeached leaders will not be allowed to vie again for public office.
  • Sonko says he's ready to fight for his seat.

Politician Mike Sonko says he has obtained KRA, DCI, EACC, HELB, and other clearance certificates in readiness to vie for the Nairobi Gubernatorial election.

The impeached governor said he is ready to face his political opponents and defend his seat in Nairobi.

His statement comes after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said that it considers a person disqualified from running for public office.

EACC opined that if a leader is dismissed from office or has misused and abused state office in contravention of Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership Integrity Act, 2012 they will not be allowed to vie for public office again.

”To this end, EACC will conduct integrity vetting of all candidates in the upcoming by-elections and communicate its determinations to IEBC for further action,” said the anti-graft commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Twalib Mbarak.

The pronouncement by the EACC was made amid upcoming by-elections announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for Nairobi governor, Machakos senator, Matungu MP, Kabuchai MP, and several ward polls set to be held in the first half of next year.
