The Building Bridges Initiative Secretariat has given IEBC until end of January 2021 to complete signature verification or risk being shown the door.
The BBI team argued that it submitted over 4.4 million signatures in December 2020, but as at last week, IEBC had only verified over 500,000 signatures despite recruiting 400 verification clerks.
Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, BBI Secretariat co-chairman Junet Mohamed accused the IEBC of being a stumbling block to the BBI referendum, adding that if they don’t complete the exercise by end of January, they may be kicked out like their predecessors.
“The biggest problem the BBI faces is the electoral commission… We handed the IEBC the signatures nearly a month ago and there is nothing to show for it. The exercise must be completed before the end of January. IEBC bosses surely know how Issack Hassan and his team left the commission,” he said as quoted by a local daily.
He accused IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati of being behind a scheme to frustrate the BBI process. He, however, noted that they are not afraid of kicking Chebukati and his team out of office.
“Let the commission be reminded that we’re not tired. We’re ready to kick them out if need arises,” he divulged.
