In a ruling on Friday, the court dismissed petitions by activist Okiya Omtatah and Habil Kongo challenging the nomination of Ms Mwenda to the post.  

The High Court has given the green light for the Nairobi County Assembly to vet deputy governor nominee Anne Mwenda.

In a ruling on Friday, the court dismissed petitions by activist Okiya Omtatah and Habil Kongo challenging the nomination of Ms Mwenda to the post.

The ruling therefore means that the county assembly will start vetting Ms Mwenda from 9am on Friday (January 15, 2021) as earlier scheduled.


If approved by the Nairobi County Assembly, Ms Mwenda will be appointed Deputy Governor, and later take over as New Nairobi County boss, meaning that acting Nairobi Governor Benson Mutura will have to leave the post and resume his duties as Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

The decision will also mean that there wouldn’t be a by-election in Nairobi as earlier indicated by IEBC.

All eyes are now on the Nairobi County Assembly as they are the ones to determine the city’s fate.

Meanwhile, Nairobi ex-governor Mike Sonko opposed the vetting of Ms Mwenda claiming that he had withdrawn her nomination as deputy governor.
