Babu Owino claimed that Chebukati has failed in his role at the IEBC, adding that after BBI referendum it will be time for him to exit the polls body.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has expressed his desire to be the next IEBC boss after Wafula Chebukati exits office.

Speaking during the funeral of former Ndhiwa MP Zablon Owigo Olang, Babu hit out at Chebukati and his team for delaying the BBI signature verification exercise.

Babu Owino claimed that Chebukati has failed in his role at the IEBC, adding that after BBI referendum it will be time for him to exit the polls body.

He noted that once Chebukati exits, he will be available to take over the role.

“Wafula Chebukati should fast-track the signature verification exercise so that all can be clear for the much-awaited referendum. But after the referendum, it will be time for Chebukati to go so that I can take over," Babu Owino said.

In the Kenyan Constitution, one is not eligible to be appointed to the Commission if he/she at any time within the preceding five years, held office, or stood for an election as MP, MCA or a member of the governing body of a political party, or holds any State office.

Meanwhile, IEBC recently published over 1.3 verified signatures and requested Kenyans to confirm the same.

According to IEBC, anyone who finds their name on the list without their consent should report to the commission.
