Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko broke down in tears during an appearance in court on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

The ex-county boss was explaining to the court that he had acquired a new legal team to represent him in his ongoing corruption case.

During the hearing on the case on January 26, Sonko notified the court that he had fired his lawyers, Cecil Miller and George Kithi.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti granted him seven more days, that is until Tuesday, February 2, to assemble a new legal team.

New legal team

Sonko’s new lawyers, Alfred Nyamu, John Khaminwa, and Assa Nyakundi sought more time on Wednesday, telling the court they needed 30 days to get proper instructions and peruse the documents of the lawsuit.

But the state counsel opposed the request and urged the court to give the new team seven days to familiarise themselves with the case.

Sonko was charged with conspiracy to defraud the county government of Ksh14 million in September 2020.

He faces charges of conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption and conflict of interest after anti-corruption court magistrate Peter Ooko dismissed his application challenging the legality of the new charge sheet drafted by the Director of Public Prosecution.
