The Siaya County Assembly has passed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum Bill.

Siaya which is ODM leader Raila Odinga's home turf, is the first County Assembly to pass the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill to facilitate BBI referendum.

More county assemblies especially in Nyanza, Coast, Mt Kenya, Eastern and Western regions are expected to follow suit.

Counties in the Rift Valley region; the political base of Deputy President William Ruto are expected to vote against the Bill since the DP has been a harsh critic of the BBI process.

Meanwhile, only 24 counties are needed for the Bill to pass and progress to the next stage.

Last week, a delegation of MCAs from over 10 county assemblies in the Mt Kenya region assured President Uhuru Kenyatta that they'll pass the Bill.
