Preparations for the burial of Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji are underway at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery.  

The leader who died on Monday morning will be buried at around 3 pm in accordance with Muslim traditions.  

In line with the preparation, several Muslim leaders have come together to assist in the burial preparation, among them Nairobi Nairobi Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub. 

A video circulating online shows Yakub digging the final resting place of Mzee Haji. By press time, it was not clear what type of relationship Yakub had with Haji. 

Yakub was donned in his full work uniform while digging the grave. 

Haji died at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after a long battle with illness. 

In late 2020, Haji who is the chair of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce had been flown to Turkey for treatment.

Several leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta have remembered Haji as an exemplary public figure. 

In his public service stint, Haji served as Minister of Defence from 2008 to 2013, acting Minister of Internal Security and Provincial Affairs in 2012, and Senator for Garisaa from 2013 to February 2021.
