According to the court, Echesa is to remain behind bars until tomorrow (Tuesday March 9, 2021) when the bail ruling will be delivered.

A Kiambu Court has ordered for further detention of former Sports CS Rashid Echesa who's been accused of assaulting an IEBC official in the recently concluded Matungy by-election.

According to the court, Echesa is to remain behind bars until tomorrow (Tuesday March 9, 2021) when the bail ruling will be delivered.

During the hearing, the prosecution requested that Echesa be detained for seven days to allow for further investigation, but the defense opposed the application.

According to Echesa's lawyers, giving the proscution more tim for investigation would amount to a waste of public rsources.

“Don’t allow police to waste public resources returning to Mumias for further investigations when they already wasted public resources bringing Echesa to Nairobi,” said Echesa’s lawyer, urging the court to reject the prosecution’s request.

Echesa was arrested on Friday last week after he failed to present himself to the authorities as directed by the  National Police Service.

He is required to answer to charges of assaulting an IEBC official at Matungu after a viral video emerged online showing him slapping an innocent officer overseeing the by-election.

Meanwhile, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala and Mugirango South MP Slyvanus Osoro have been arrested in connection to violence witnessed in Matungu and Kiamokama ward in Kisii County respectively.

The two were arrested after surrendering themselves to police in Kakamega and Kisii respectively.
