The President has sent the family a donation of one million shillings to help with burial arrangements.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a donation to the Obama family as their matriarch the late Mama Sarah Obama was laid to rest today in Kogello, Siaya County.

Reports indicate that the President has sent the family a donation of one million shillings to help with burial arrangements.

The funeral was attended by several dignitaries including; Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo, Governor Anyang' Nyong'o ( Kisumu), Governor Cornel Rasanga (Siaya) , ICT PS Jerome Ochieng, and PS devolution Francis Owino among others.

Speaking at the funeral, Governor Rasanga directed the county government tourism department to gazette Mama Sarah’s home as a tourist attraction.

Mama Sarah has been buried in accordance with Muslim traditions. Her burial ceremony was restricted to close family and friends with locals being locked out.


Earlier, roads leading to her home were barricaded to block residents from flocking the deceased’s home.

Mama Sarah Obama died on Monday, 29th March 2021 while receiving treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga hospital in Kisumu County. She died aged 99.

Mama Sarah has been mourned as a great pillar of strength to her community and family.

His grandson former United States President Barrack Obama mourned her grandmother noting that she was instrumental in helping him trace his history.

"My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny. We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life," he said.

Her granddaughter Auma Obama said: “Just lost the most important person in my life - my gran, Mama Sarah. My heart is broken! But as I write, not able to stop the tears from pouring, I know I was blessed to have her for so long! My inspiration, my rock, my comfort zone, my safe space. Rest in peace Dani!”
