  • Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu has responded after receiving a letter from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan met with a Special Envoy of President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in Dar es Salaam.

On Saturday President Kenyatta sent the delegation led by Sports CS Amina Mohamed to Tanzania in an effort to restore diplomatic ties between the two countries.

CS Amina also delivered President Kenyatta's message of goodwill to his Tanzanian counterpart as well as an invitation letter requesting the Tanzanian leader to make an official visit to Kenya.

Tanzania guaranteed Kenya support, restoration of diplomatic ties after President Suluhu. President Kenyatta also guaranteed the Tanzanian leader support from the Kenyan government especially in restoring the diplomatic ties which had been broken during the late President John Pombe Magufuli tenure.

Diplomatic Tussle

In August last year, Tanzania banned Kenya's national carrier deepening the row triggered by Tanzania's controversial handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tanzania said Kenya Airways flights were being banned "on a reciprocal basis" after Kenya decided against including Tanzania in a list of countries permitted to enter the country after flights resumed on 1 August following a lockdown to tame the pandemic.

The row started after Kenya blocked Tanzanian truck drivers from entering the country, fearing they would spread the disease.
