Residents of Baringo South are living in fear after armed bandits on Thursday invaded the area and attacked a police camp leaving one KDF soldier dead.
Reports indicate that the bandits raided the Mukutani military camp at around 8pm.
According to Benjamin Lecher; the area chief, the officer was killed during an exchange of fire.
Mr Lecher further noted that the camp hosts different security personnel including; KDF soldiers and officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), and the General Service Unit (GSU).
“The soldier was killed in a firefight. His body is still lying at the camp. There is still tension in the area,” said Lecher.
Meanwhile, the government recently announced a resumption of a security operation in Baringo, Laikipia and Turkana counties after a series of bandit attacks in the areas.
While announcing the security operation, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya noted that attempts by local leaders to have negotiations had failed.
"Political leaders drawn from Baringo, West Pokot and Turkana had requested that we allow them to conduct a one-month peace campaign and voluntary disarmament. This has recorded minimal results and at least four attacks have been reported in the past two days.
"The leaders were determined to give different solutions to banditry attacks within 30 days. They have so far held four meetings. Since then only three guns have been surrendered. With this trend it will take an eternity to save the situation," Natembeya said while announcing resumption of the security operation one week ago.
