  • Health CS Mutahi Kagwe says Kenya expects more vaccines from Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson to back up the ongoing vaccination exercise

The government is planning to import the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Reports indicated that the government had initiated the move as the world struggles to get a hold of the AstraZeneca vaccine due to the situation in India.

India banned the exportation of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine to focus on vaccinating its citizens first to mitigate rising cases of Covid-19.

On Wednesday during a presser, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe says there is a serious challenge on the global supply of AstraZeneca vaccine.

Vaccine Shortage

He said India is recording high numbers of COVID-19 cases as well as deaths and the demand for the AstraZeneca vaccine is very high making it impossible for the Covax facility to meet demand in Africa.

Kagwe observed that the positivity rate has gone down in the last two weeks saying this is as a result of the containment measures in the five disease-infected Counties.

He however pointed out that they have noted a spike in numbers in Counties that are not on lockdown among them Murang’a, Siaya, Uasin Gishu, and Nyeri.
