  • Lady Justice Martha Koome has been nominated as the next Chief Justice of Kenya.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Tuesday finalized the process of evaluating candidates for the position of Chief Justice of Kenya and nominated Lady Justice Martha Koome.

JSC will now forward Koome's name to President Uhuru Kenyatta for a formal appointment.

She beat 9 other candidates who were interviewed by the JSC for the position.

Lady Justice Koome had previously sought the Chief Justice but was unsuccessful.

The announcement comes after the Court of Appeal stayed the orders issued by the High Court barring the recruitment of the Chief Justice.

Last week the High Court barred Judicial Service Commission from conducting interviews for the Supreme Court judge and making deliberations on CJ position pending case determination.

But the JSC rushed to the Court of Appeal to overturn the ruling. Three petitions were filed challenging Prof Olive Mugenda to chair the JSC panel.
