  • Police have confirmed a miraa vehicle was hijacked by suspected Al Shabaab militants with three occupants onboard.

A vehicle ferrying Miraa from Meru County to Liboi was hijacked by suspected members of the Al Shabaab militia.

Reports indicate that the miraa pick-up truck was hijacked about 5 kilometers from Liboi town.

North Eastern Regional Police Commander, David Bunei, confirmed the incident adding that the hijackers released the occupants of the vehicle.

The assailants released the three who include the driver Abdikaddir Hassan Elmi, Abdullahi Issak Harun- a Miraa dealer and Habiba Abdi Sirat who had hiked a lift, after offloading the several sacks of Miraa that were being transported.

Over the weekend five suspects were nabbed in Mtito Andei with explosives. The arrests are the latest in the fight against terrorism in Kenya.

Last month anti-terror police detectives arrested a mother and daughter who were ferrying firearms into Kenya for terror activities.

Goretti Mwihia and her daughter, Joyce Muthoni Mwihia, were arrested in Racecourse, Dagoretti area with an assortment of weapons.

Detectives found them with an M4 sniper rifle, with an effective range of 500 metres, and more than 3,700 rounds of ammunition.

DCI said the duo also had four pistols and a close-quarter Uzi automatic submachine gun, capable of firing over 600 rounds per minute.
