Uhuru Takes UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Virtual Tour of Westlands Primary

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, May 13, 2021, took British Prime Minister Boris John through a virtual tour of Westlands Primary School.

The Head of State was also taken through a virtual tour of Cleves Cross Primary School Ferryhill, United Kingdom as part of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

Both Westlands Primary and Cleves Cross Primary are part of the Connecting Classrooms Through Global Learning (CCGL) programme which aims at connecting schools globally and educating them on international issues.

“The Centre for Global Education has been contracted by the British Council as an Expert Lead Centre. We support the recruitment of schools and clusters who would like to engage in international school partnership projects," the project describes itself. 

During the meeting, President Kenyatta and Boris urged other world leaders to invest in education.

The meeting was also attended by the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Jane Marriott, and Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha.

GPE aims at providing educational financing and transforming learning systems for school going boys and girls in up to 90 countries.

The UK has been the largest donor to GPE, contributing 13 per cent of its income since 2005. On the other hand, Kenya has been the largest beneficiary, receiving Ksh10.9 billion to date.

The two-day summit will be held in London on July 28 and July 29. Kenya and the UK are pushing other countries to raise $5 billion over five years to give 175 million children in the world access to quality education.

“Supporting girls to get 12 years of quality education is one of the smartest investments we can make as the world recovers from Covid-19. Otherwise we risk creating a lost pandemic generation.

“Across the world, there is a vast untapped resource – girls whose education has been cut short or denied altogether, who could be leading efforts to pull their communities out of poverty," Boris stated.

“I’m going to be working throughout the UK’s G7 presidency to ensure leaders invest in those girls and boost children’s life chances around the world," he assured.
