  • Kenya has been recording more cases of the deadly Indian variant of Covid dubbed B.1.617.

Kenyans have been cautioned about the fourth wave of Covid-19 which could start in July 2021.

The country currently has a positivity rate of 8 percent after President Uhuru Kenyatta initiated measures to curb the spread of the disease.

On Wednesday Kenya recorded 20 cases of the deadly Indian variant of Covid dubbed B.1.617.

Director of Health Patrick Amoth explained that Kenya has been experiencing a Covid-19 peak after every three months and data showed the next peak could be in July.

“If you look at the mortality pattern from March 2020 to March 2021, a clear picture is coming out. Our analysis shows us we had a peak in July and after three months we had another in November,” Amoth said.

“We can categorically state that if this trend continues, our next peak should be in July,” he added.

Last week the county government of Kisumu quarantined 100 workers who came into close contact with 8 people that tested positive for the Indian covid variant.

This was after 8 foreigners tested positive for the Indian covid variant dubbed the B.1.617 and the county government is currently doing contact tracing.

"Following gene sequencing carried out on samples by the National government testing laboratories, it has been ascertained that one of the samples turned positive for the Indian variant of Covid-19," the presser read

"At least 100 other workers who are said to have had close contact with the 8 have been placed under strict quarantine as the county moves with speed to stop a further spread of the virus," it added.

India is experiencing the worst surge of Covid-19 after the B.1.617 variant was directed in the country that has reported more than 20 million cases.

As part of measures to curb the spread of the Indian variant, Kenya suspended flights to and from India.
