  • The move is a massive blow as Jubilee Party may now be forced to go back to the drawing board a few hours to the election.

The Jubilee Party has suffered a blow in Bonchari Constituency after its Kisii County Secretary ditched the party and joined the rival ODM outfit.

Isaac Motari joined ODM on Sunday, barely two days before Bonchari residents take to the polls to elect their new legislator.

While defecting, Motari noted that Bonchari deserves fresh blood which he believescan be found in ODM.

“Jubilee party Secretary for Kisii County Isaac Motari (centre) who has been at the centre of his party candidate’s campaign team has thrown his weight behind our candidate Eng. Pavel Oimeke ahead of Tuesday 18 by-election. He says Bonchari deserves new blood & fresh leadership,” ODM tweeted while confirming the defection.

The Bonchari by-election is set for Tuesday, May 18 2021 and has attracted 13 candidates from Jubilee, ODM, UDA and other parties.

Over the past weeks, several top leaders have pitched camp in Bonchari campaigning for their candidates. The ODM brigade was led by the party’s Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Kisii Governor James Ongwae and Woman Rep Janet Ong’era.

UDA Party also has a team on the ground comprising of MPs; Alice Wahome (Kandara), Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango), Beatrice Kones (Bomet East), Nakuru Woman Rep Elizabeth Chelule, Kericho’s Florence Bore and Elgeyo Marakwet’s Jane Chebaibai.

The by-election is crucial as all parties involved are seeking to make a statement in Kisii; a county that is considered a swing vote area in the upcoming 2022 general election.
