Police have reportedly pitched camp and restricted movement around a Kisii Hotel where ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and a section of party official spent the night at.

In a statement on its Facebook page, ODM noted that the police had cordoned off ‘Ufanisi Resort’ but did not explain why.

“Police have cordoned off Ufanisi Resort where ODM Party officials SG Sifuna and Treasurer Bosire together with some of our candidate's agents spent the night,” ODM posted.

Meanwhile, the Bonchari residents have today taken to the polls to elect their new Member of Parliament.

The election is believed to be a three horse race pitting ODM against Jubilee and UDA Party.

ODM has fronted former EPRA boss Pavel Oimeke, Jubilee has Zebedeo Opore while UDA is rallying behind Teresa Oroo Bitutu.

The by-election kicked off smoothly with residents with no major hiccups reported across the constituency.

Security has been beefed up in the constituency amid claims that the government is using state resources to intimidate other candidates in the race.

The Bonchari by-election is a high stake contest as many consider it a litmus test for the three big parties ahead of the 2022 general election.

Kisii County is considered a swing vote area; therefore the party that emerges victorious in Bonchari may have an advantage heading to 2022.
