  • Parents directed to transfer affected learners after government shuts down schools.

Thirty schools in Nakuru were shut down by the government for allegedly operating without authorization.

The schools in the Nakuru Town West constituency were closed after the government established they have been operating without registration documents from the Ministry of Education.

"By not being registered means the institutions have not been captured in the National Education Management Information System and therefore the learners cannot be registered for national examinations," Deputy County Commissioner Michael Lesimam said.

Over 1,000 pupils were affected by the closures and their parents advised them to enrol them on other schools since the school term just began.

Mr Lesimam revealed that some of the schools had been closed previously but reopened and continued to operate without the necessary documentation.

"Some of the schools were closed down in 2019 but reopened after they moved to court to challenge the decision. In 2020, the court ruled that the status quo be maintained meaning the schools are illegal," he noted.

In 2019 Education CS George Magoha ordered Greenfield School in Changamwe, Mombasa County to be shut down over poor infrastructure.

That year Prof Magoha directed that all learning institutions that pose a danger to students be shut down.

This was after the death of 8 pupils at Precious Talents School in Nairobi where a classroom collapsed.

The Education Ministry began an intense check up on the state of schools and several others around the country were ordered to close down after officials found they posed certain dangers to learners.
