DCI arrests doctors operating an unauthorized abortion clinic in Pangani.


Agents from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two doctors operating an unauthorized abortion clinic in Pangani.

Reports indicated that detectives found ten decomposing fetuses during the operation carried out on Friday, October 16, 2020.

Dr Mwaura Karumbi, Dr John Marore, Christopher Mwangi, Erick Mwenda and Judith Anyanzwa were arrested at Prestige Health Point Medical Centre along Muranga Road.

During the raid, police recovered assorted medical appliances, medical records and assorted drugs suspected to be used in conducting the abortions.

Abortion illegal

“Also recovered at the scene was a blue bin with decomposing foetuses numbering about 10,” reads a police report on the incident.

All the foetuses found at the clinic were taken to City mortuary.

Abortion in Kenya is regulated by Article 26(IV) of the Constitution of Kenya, which states that: Abortion is not permitted unless, in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is need for emergency treatment or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other written law.

Every day, 320 Kenyan women are hospitalised and seven die as a result of dangerous backstreet abortions, according to a report by Marie Stopes.
