  • President Kenyatta declared four vacancies at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the resignation of commissioners in 2017 and 2018.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has revoked the appointment of Dorothy Jemator to the IEBC selection panel.

In a gazette notice, the Head of State dismissed the appointment of Dorothy Jemator and appointed Morris Kimuli.

“I appoint Morris Kimuli to be a member of the selection panel for the selection of nominees for the appointment of members of the IBEC. The appointment of Kimengech Dorothy Jemator is revoked,” the gazette notice by the President read.

The controversial appointment of Ms Jemator was first rejected by the High Court in a decision made on April 28 2021.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had named Jemator, former Constitutional Implementation Commission vice-chair Elizabeth Muli, Gideon Solonka, James Awuori, Elizabeth Odundo, Joseph Mutie and Farudin Abdalla as members of the panel.

The panel will nominate replacements for the four IEBC commissioners who resigned in 2017 and 2018.

'In exercise of the powers conferred in Section 7a (2) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Act 2011. I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces declare vacancies in four positions of members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission," the notice read in part.

The Head of State's declaration comes when the IEBC has been criticized for its efficiency to deliver credible elections in the country.
