DCI have arrested a man believed to have slit his wife's throat.

Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a man believed to have slit his wife's throat.

In a statement o Saturday, October 17, 2020, DCI noted that the man had been on the run since October 13, 2020, when he is said to have killed 23-year-old Mercy Njeri Mbatia.

"Detectives based at Njoro Sub-County have arrested 34-year-old John Mwangi Githaiga at Mathangauta area," the DCI's statement read in part.

According to detectives, a sword believed to have been used to commit the heinous crime was also recovered following the search for Githaiga.


"Mwangi who slit his victim’s throat with a sharp object and later burnt her head, hands and legs to the knee area has been on the run and will be charged accordingly. Recovered sword kept as an exhibit," the statement continued.

Domestic Violence and Femicide Kenya

Last year, data from the femicide awareness platform Counting Dead Women Kenya showed that 25 women were murdered by men between January and February that year alone.

Forty-six women were victims of femicide between January and May. By November 16, the figure had risen to 82 cases of reported femicide.

According to government data, 45 per cent of women and girls aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence and 14 per cent have experienced sexual violence.
