Police lobbed tear gas to disperse a crowd that had gathered at Kondole after President Uhuru Kenyatta's convoy left for Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.

Today in Kisumu County, the president's motorcade had left for JKI Stadium ahead of the Madaraka Day Celebration.

Earlier President Kenyatta received a warm reception at Kondele while heading to Jomo Kenyatta International stadium for the Madaraka Day fete.

The country is today celebrating 58 years of self-rule in what is commonly known as Madaraka Day.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to lead Kenyans in celebrating the event from Mamboleo grounds in Kisumu City.

Due to the Covid-19 situation in the country and specifically Kisumu, only 3,000 people will be allowed to enter the meeting venue.

This is the first-ever national event to be celebrated in the lakeside city of Kisumu and is part of President Kenyatta’s plan of devolving national events to the counties.

So far, several dignitaries have arrived at the venue with the President expected within the next one hour.
