1000 Nairobi City County "Kanjo" will be retrained by the National Police Service (NPS) on their handling of offenders which has often come under criticism.

The National Police Service is set to train 1000 Nairobi City County inspectorate officers for a period of four months.

Popularly known as Askaris, the Nairobi County officers will undergo their training at the Kiganjo Police Training College and the Administration Police Training College in Embakasi starting June 2021.

The officers will be trained on professionalism and discipline at the police training facilities as revealed by Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director of Enforcement Services, Mark Leleruk.

The askaris have often be put on the spot for their handling of offenders, with members of the public nicknaming them, "beasts" for their rather perceived inhumane treatment of offenders.

“We want to introduce a new culture of integrity and professionalism with career and development courses for corporals and sergeants,” Leleruk said.

Other county officers who will also be trained include Traffic marshals and enforcement services personnel.

Following the completion of the training programme the officers will be required to mop up Nairobi City streets and rid them of drug peddlers, parking boys, hawkers, and cartels taking over public toilets.

“The better equipped uniformed enforcement officers are expected to make the city safe,” Leleruk stated.
