According to Maendeleo ya Wanawake, recent pronunciations by Maraga and Mutunga created the perception that CJ Koome is unable to carry out her duties.

Renowned Kenyan Women body Maendeleo ya Wanawake has come under criticism over its recent statement attacking former Chief Justices; David Maraga and Dr. Willy Mutunga for their remarks on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to reject the nomination of six judges.

In a statement released on Thursday, Maendeleo ya Wanawake accused Maraga and Mutunga of undermining CJ Koome’s leadership.

According to the body, recent pronunciation by Maraga and Mutunga created the perception that CJ Koome is unable to carry out her duties.

“Both Willy Mutunga and David Maraga have opted to totally bypass Martha Koome in their bid to impose their own legal philosophy and interpretation of the Constitution on her, in effect implying that the current Chief Justice is incapable of carrying out her duties to their lofty standards of supposed perfection.

“…This “Mansplaining” behavior is common in many workplaces, where men by their speech act as though women are incapable of understanding complex concepts unless the men give detailed explanations…We strongly condemn the chauvinism witnessed by Mutunga and Maraga. As supposed defenders of justice, they should know better,” the statement read in part.

The statement was in reference to recent remarks by Murunga and Maraga calling for the president to respect the constitution and appoint the judges nominated by the Judicial Service Commission.

Maendeleo ya Wanawake statement has elicited massive reactions with a section of netizens stating that the statement was ill-informed.
