According to the US, Kenya is a strategic partner in East and Central Africa, thus the decision to send the troops.

United States (US) President Joe Biden has announced the deployment of more soldiers to Kenya to help fight against the al shabaab militia.

In a letter to Congress, President Trump noted that Kenya was a strategic partner in the war against terror, adding that the special team of soldiers would work with Kenyan troops in combating the terrorists.

"In furtherance of counter-terrorism efforts, the United States continues to work with partners around the globe, with a particular focus on the United States Central and Africa Commands’ areas of responsibility.

"…In this context, the United States has deployed forces to conduct counter-terrorism operations and to advise, assist, and accompany security forces of select foreign partners on counter-terrorism operations....United States Armed Forces are deployed to Kenya to support counter-terrorism operations in East Africa,” Biden’s letter read in part.

It is, however, not clear how many soldiers have been sent by the US government for the assignment. Currently, the US has a military base in Manda Bay where her military works jointly with Kenyan forces.

The decision to deploy American soldiers to Kenya is a major boost in the fight against al shabaab as the militia group has been giving Kenya a nightmare especially in the North-Eastern part of the country.

Over the past few weeks, several people have been injured after falling victim to attacks by suspected al-shabaab militia. In other instances, IEDs have been planted along major roads leading to death of security personnel and other road users in the region.

The Kenyan and American governments hope the deployment will help neutralise al shabaab activities in East Africa specifically Kenya where they conducted a number of attacks in the past.
