  • The governor wants the president to explain how he intends to solve the insecurity being witnessed in the county, failure to which they won't give KDF land to set up bases in the region.

The Turkana County Government under the leadership of Governor Josphat Nanok has made a U-turn on its decision to allow the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) set up military camps in the county.

According to Governor Nanok, Turkana locals will only surrender land for the KDF base once the government has addressed the issue of insecurity in the area.

Speaking on Sunday, Governor Nanok noted that until the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces President Uhuru Kenyatta explains the solution to the insecurity problems facing the region, they will not give land for the KDF bases.

“We had agreed as elected leaders to allocate land for the Kenya Defence Forces to set up camp in various areas in the County. We want the Commander-In-Chief to tell us the solution to insecurity in the larger Turkana before we give out the land,” said Nanok.

The county government and locals had agreed to give land to the KDF to set up military bases across the county for security purposes, but that seems to be on hold going by the governor’s remarks.

Nanok’s remarks com at a time when there’s increased tension in the area owing to bandit attacks.

According to the governor, the frequent attacks have made it difficult for residents to go about their daily activities.
