  • During her maiden speech at Statehouse Nairobi, CJ Koome vowed to protect the independence of the Judiciary.

Chief Justice Martha Koome held a meeting Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Maj. Gen. Mohammed Badi.

On Friday Gen Badi paid her a courtesy call at the Supreme Court where he met with the newly installed CJ.

According to reports, the two discussed plans to establish more Small Claims Courts to be based within the informal settlements in the Nairobi area.

Last week Thursday CJ Koome during a visit to the newly launched Small Claims Court at Milimani Commercial Court stated that under her leadership the Judiciary will continue setting up similar courts to deliver justice to Kenyans.

''This plan aims to enhance the efficiency of justice delivery at the Court which has already received over 800 cases since its establishment six weeks ago with 50% being personal injury claims,'' CJ Koome said.

''All I am saying is that the Small Claims Court is aimed at promoting access to and expediting delivery of justice by increasing dispute resolution efficiency in observing the statutory mandate to finalize each case within a period of 60 days,'' she continued.

During her maiden speech at Statehouse Nairobi, CJ Koome vowed to protect the independence of the Judiciary.

"I have no difficulties to state that the independence of the Judiciary cannot be interfered with. Our decision making, hiring of staff is protected in the Constitution. Any party trying to direct how the Judiciary should decide a matter would be interfering with the Constitution," the CJ said.

"We cannot work when the chain is broken... The Executive has a responsibility to ensure budgetary allocations that support the functions of the Judiciary," she added.
