A day after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) froze salary increments for civil servants, several workers unions have raised concerns over the directive.

SRC froze salary increments for a period of two years.

Union leaders today, June 18, 2021, stated that workers deserve the raise and demanded that SRC withdraw the statement within 14 days.

"There has been deliberate efforts by the government and its agents to attack, frustrate and suffocate the operations of public sector trade unions, including withholding unions dues with blatant disregard of the law as well as defying court orders," Electrical Workers Union Secretary-General Ernest Nadome stated.

KUSU sec-gen Charles Mukhwaya maintained that the unions would not sit back and allow the rights of Kenyan workers to be disregarded.

"It is not going to be business as usual. It is a matter that is affecting lives, and the economy of this country. 

"It is this workers that generate the revenue of this country. Therefore, if you are going to make a decision that is going to affect them as such, it is only courteous that SRC and the government call these stakeholders and sit down," he said.

In a statement, the SRC on Thursday said it will not review salaries for civil servants for the next two years in a bid to stabilize the economy, citing Covid-19 constraints to the budget.
