Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected the creation of new constituencies ahead of the 2022 general elections.

According to the electoral agency, the boundary delimitation exercise will be complete by March next year.

Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the earliest the 70 proposed new Constituencies will come to fruition is in 2024.

Article 89 of the constitution requires the commission to review names and boundaries of constituencies at intervals of not less than eight years and not more than 12.

IEBC is also mandated to review the number, names and boundaries of wards periodically but the number of constituencies must be maintained at 290 per the constitution.

The last delimitation or fixing the boundary was conducted in 2012, meaning that the commission can still conduct the exercise by 2024.

IEBC was allocated over Ksh150 million in Supplementary Budget II to start the process of delimitation of electoral boundaries.

Chebukati had announced that the commission had developed the Boundaries Review Operations Plan (BROP) and that it was set to start implementing it.
