The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested five suspected robbers who were on a mission to break into Prime Bank, OTC branch in Nairobi.

Charles Mulo, Fredrick Muderwa, Jesse Muriuki, Gabriel Mungai and Reuben Njuka were arrested in a joint operation conducted by DCI Officers and police officers from Kamukunji Police Station.

According to a series of tweets posted by the DCI Twitter page, the five were arrested in the wee hours of Friday morning as they readied themselves to break into the bank that is located on Ukwala lane in downtown Nairobi.

The crafty thieves had secured themselves the night's accommodation in a lodging in Angle House, which also hosts Prime Bank, carefully choosing rooms that shared a wall with the bank.

In a robbery plan more likely to be seen in a Hollywood movie, the 5 planned to drill through the wall and make their way into the bank where they would secure their loot before escaping through the same route.

Their plans were thwarted after detectives got wind of their plans and ambushed them before they accessed the bank. The five caught red-handed, scrambled into the ceiling forcing the police to bring it down. This exposed the desperate gang who were at this point hanging onto the roof trusses.

"With the iron sheets above them and the armed sleuths waiting to pounce on them on the ground, the miscreants were left with no other option, other than to surrender into the good hands of our officers," a tweet by the DCI read.

Police officers managed to recover three hacksaws, one knotted twisted rope, one metal driller, five metal bars, one metal cutter scissors and one suitcase. The five were booked at Kamukunji Police Station as they await arraignment in court.
