Senator Millicent Omanga has hit out at COTU Secretary General Francis for his apparent 'obsession with postponing the 2022 general elections.

Omanga alleged that Atwoli's assertions on the proposed postponement of the 2022 polls date were hinged on the fate of the Building Bridges Initiative.

The BBI referendum process was paused by the High Court and its progress now depends on & Court of Appeal judges who will deliver their ruling on August 20th 2021.

"Atwoli is obsessed with the desire to postpone the 2022 elections. Of course, this is in retaliation to the sudden death of BBI whose burial is on August 20, at the CoA. Whoever is close to him, please tell him in a language he understands that 09.08.2022 is the date, " Senator Omanga tweeted.

Senator Omanga's tweet was triggered by an interview Atwoli granted to NTV on Monday 5th July.

"The constitution is a guiding political document that guides Kenyans but there are other things which can happen which are beyond this constitution, " Atwoli said.

Atwoli went ahead to label politicians claiming the election could not be postponed as 'stupid'.

"They are people who don't know what they are talking about. They think I am afraid of Kenya elections or the candidate I am favouring may not win, but it's not that," he added.

The COTU boss noted that the peaceful co-existence of Kenyans especially in the post-election period was important adding that this was the reason for the Building Bridges Initiative.

"BBI will have to go through," he said as he finalised the interview.

This follows up on similar sentiments Atwoli made on June 17th during a press conference.

"If there is no BBI, we will postpone elections until we get BBI," he said.

Despite these strong sentiments by one of Kenya's most senior statesmen, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)recently announced that the elections were scheduled for August 9th 2022.
