President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that he will continue with his tour of Ukambani region, once the Covid-19 pandemic scales down.

In a statement on Tuesday, State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena said Kenyatta would make a scaled-down inspection of development projects in the region, at a date to be announced soon.

The announcement came shortly after President Kenyatta met leaders from the Lower Eastern region at State House Nairobi.

"It is notified that whereas His Excellency the President remains keen to assess the impact of his Administration’s transformative projects and programmes across the Country, in this instance he will make a scaled down inspection of identified projects in the Lower Eastern Region in the company of all local leaders, on a date(s) to be notified."

"The presidential engagement will be conducted in full fidelity with the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health," read the statement.

The Ukambani leaders delegation was led by former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu, Makueni Deputy Governor Adelina Mwau, Machakos Deputy Governor Eng. Francis Maliti and other leaders serving in both Houses of Parliament.

The Head of State noted that the leaders had agreed not to go against Public Order No. 4 of 2021 on COVID-19 barring political events and public gatherings which are believed to accelerate the spread of Covid-19.

"The meeting also observed that in light of new variants of COVID-19 which are deadlier and more communicable, a number of Kenya’s regional neighbours had introduced heightened containment measures," said the statement.

President Kenyatta was scheduled to start his tour of the Lower Eastern region on Tuesday 6th to Wednesday 7th July, 2021.

He was set to tour Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties in what had been dubbed as a 'developmental tour of the region.'
