The government is in the spotlight after it failed to explain a Ksh 2.5 billion hole in the Kenya Defence Forces accounts from funds advanced to the government by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
This comes after the Treasury Permanent Secretary Dr Julius Muia failed to explain the difference in the amount KDF received from the AU in 2018 and the sum captured in the Auditor General's books.
The Auditor General's report reveals that KDF received 6.5 billion from the continental body while a July 2018 letter penned by the Treasury CS Henry Rotich claimed that the sum was Ksh 8.5 billion.

The Auditor-General reports another discrepancy in the military's accounting books as Ksh 0.58 billion cannot be accounted for.
Pushed to the wall by National Assembly Public Accounts Committee, Dr. Muia requested more time to get information on the matter.
KDF has been in Somalia for over a decade since then-President Mwai Kibaki kickstarted the war against Al Shabaab in Operation Linda Nchi.
In 2012, the Kenyan military in Somalia joined the African Union Mission in Somalia and has been using its resources to fund the battle against Al Shaabab before getting compensated by the AU.
