Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa has been released on Sh4m cash bail after spending four nights in police custody over murder charges.

Her bodyguard Geoffrey Otieno, who is her co-accused in the case, has also been released but on different terms. He is to pay either a cash bail of one million shillings or a Sh1.5 million bond.

Appearing at the Mombasa High Court on Friday, the two were directed to surrender their passports to the court.

Presiding Judge Lady Njoki Mwangi  Justice cautioned the two against interfering with suspects in the case, noting any such reports could lead to cancellation of their bail terms.

Jumwa and Otieno are accused of being involved in the murder of Ngumbao Jola; a 48-year-old-man who died during chaos that occurred during campaigns for a by-election in Ganda Ward last year.

Drama in court

On Thursday, there was drama in court after the Directorate of Public Prosecutions failed to produce a mental assessment report for the legislator's co-accused.

Lady Justice Njoki Mwangi halted the hearing even as she queried the validity of Jumwa’s results, saying there were inconsistencies in the report.
