Attempts to salvage property were thwarted by the severity of the flames which burnt down dozens of stalls.

Photos from the scene show firefighters from the Nairobi County Government and the National Youth Service in Gikomba as they attempted to quell the raging flames.

Police officers were also deployed to help traders salvage their property.

The area MP Yussuf Hassan has expressed his gratitude to the firefighters who brought the fire under control.

"Disheartened by the news that yet another fire outbreak has devastated parts of Gikomba market last night. The fire has swept thru hundreds of stalls and destroyed goods worth millions of shillings and left many local traders with heavy losses," the lawmaker wrote on Twitter.

Cases of fires in Gikomba market are almost a seasonal occurrence with the market burning at least 11 times since 2010.
