  • While no reason has been given for Mutua’s ouster, reports indicate that his removal could be due to an ongoing investigation by the EACC regarding claims of irregular payments made to him by KFCB, during his tenure as CEO.

The government has relieved Dr Ezekiel Mutua of his job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB).

Reports indicate that Dr. Mutua has been replaced by Christopher Wambua from Communications Authority of Kenya, who will be serving in an acting capacity until a replacement is appointed.

While no reason has been given for Mutua’s ouster, reports indicate that his removal could be due to an ongoing investigation by the EACC regarding claims of irregular payments made to him by KFCB, during his tenure as CEO.

In a letter dated May 6, 2021, EACC wrote to KFCB Chairman seeking for documents and information to aid with the investigation against Mutua and another Board Member named Gathoni Kungu.

Some of the documents sought by EACC included personal files of the two officers, pay slips and payment vouchers for monies paid to the two officers and HR policy on salary increment among others.

“Our Commission is Investigating allegations of irregular payments of salaries and allowances to the institutions’s CEO Dr Ezekiel Mutua and a Board Member Ms Gathoni Kungu. ..Our officer Dr Mnjala and F. Abdi will be available to receive the documents and record a statement,” EACC’s statement read in part.

A part from claims of receiving irregular payments during his tenure at KFCB, a section of netizens believe that Dr Mutua’s ouster could be due to allegations that he’s been frustrating artists.

In July, comedian Eric Omondi noted that he’ll push for Mutua’s removal from office, accusing him of undermining creative, who are his employers.
