Kenya National Highway Authority(KenHA) has announced the closure of a section of Uhuru Highway from Monday 9th August to Sunday 10th October 2021.

The 63-day closure of one of Kenya's busiest roads will affect road users between the Kenyatta Avenue roundabout and University Way roundabout.

According to the notice which was issued on Friday, three lanes of outbound traffic towards Westlands shall be affected.

Two lanes have been created to serve as a deviation for traffic movement.

"Motorists are advised to use the diversion or use alternative routes," the notice said in part while apologizing for any inconveniences caused.

The closure has been necessitated by the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway whose progress status is approaching 50%.

The Ksh 59 billion shilling road is one of the most expensive single infrastructural projects initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta's government and has been financed by a public-private partnership agreement.

It is expected to cut the driving time between in the city during rush hours from two hours to about 20 minutes.

The civil works on the project are expected to complete by December 2021 while the road will be ready for use in February 2022.

Driving on the expressway will have Kenyans digging deep into their pockets with toll charges of between Ksh 100-Ksh 1,550.

The road will be managed by a subsidiary of the China Roads and Bridges Company for 27 years as they recoup the funds invested in the project.
