The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that it will reject 2022 party nomination lists which will not adhere to the two-thirds gender rule.

In a presser on Monday, IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati noted that the commission will lock out parties that do not adhere to the constitutional provision in regards to the gender rule.

"In compliance with article 81(b) on Two-Thirds Gender Rule, party nomination lists that do not adhere to the gender rule to be rejected by IEBC.

"The commission (IEBC) was directed to reject any list from political parties for the 290 constituencies that will not meet the requirements of the 2/3rds gender rule...The courts said, and we will comply," he added.

During the briefing, Chebukati cleared the air on claims that the election could be postponed, noting that the polls will be held on August 9, 2022 as stipulated by the Constitution.

"On changing elections; we are also seeing it on the media but as far as we are concerned, elections will be on the 9th. Only the courts can change that," he said

On preparation for the polls, specifically towards tackling election offences, Chebukati noted that the commission is currently engaging with relevant agencies including the ODPP and Inspector General of Police on measures necessary to have a peaceful election.

At the presser, Chebukati also noted that all public officers interested in vying during the 2022 General Election should resign from office by latest February 9, 2021.
