Education CS George Magoha has put on notice school heads charging above the set fees by the government.

The Ministry of Education has ordered schools that have charged fees outside the set guidelines by Government to refund parents.

In a circular issued by the Ministry of Education on August 9, 2021, Director of Secondary Education Paul Kibet notes that despite issuing guidelines on payable fees, some schools continue to charge parents outside the set guidelines.

"The Ministry has received numerous complaints from parents, sponsors of needy students, and the general public regarding schools charging illegal levies.

"It is noted that schools recover these levies upfront before crediting money paid as fees into the students' fees accounts. This makes students have false fees arrears leading to them being sent home," part of the statement reads.

According to the ministry, Students in national and extra county schools in major towns will now pay a maximum of Ksh 45,000 annually, which is a Ksh 10,000 reduction from the previous fees charged.

Students in county and sub-county schools in other parts of the country will now part with a maximum of Ksh 35,000 annually.

The Ministry of Education further directed that no child should be sent away from school for non-payment of the illegal levies.

“Schools are ordered to display their fees structure prominently on their notice boards. Any fees collected above the revised guidelines be refunded or treated as prepayment of fees for continuing students,” the circular reads in part.
