Deputy President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the Eldas by-election slated for October 14th 2021.

According to UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina, the decision was arrived at after consultations with the people of Eldas Ward and Wajir county.

She went on to say that the people of Eldas Ward want their late Member of County Assembly (MCA) replaced by a member of his family.

"Following extensive consultation with the community of Eldas Ward, Eldas Constituency and Wajir County, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wishes to announce that we shall not be fielding a candidate to contest for the vacant position of Member of County Assembly, Eldas Ward, Wajir County."

"The Eldas Ward community has expressed interest in supporting a family member of the departed Member of County Assembly Hon. Ibrahim Abbas," said Ms Veronica.

She mentioned that UDA is committed to continue working the people of Eldas and they stand with the family late MCA Abbas.

"United Democratic Alliance stands with the family of the late Hon. Abbas and will respect the wishes of the community of Eldas Ward, Wajir County," Ms Maina added.

The deceased MCA was holding the position on a UDA ticket.

Ibrahim Abbas died on July 4th, 2021 as he awaited a medical emergency flight to Nairobi, at the Wajir airport.

President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned the MCA as a progressive politician whose transformative leadership will be dearly missed.

"The late MCA was a robust and progressive grassroots leader whose down-to-earth approach to leadership enabled him to provide practical solutions to challenges facing his constituents," said President Kenyatta.
