The National Management Committee (NMC) which is the highest-ranking organ of the Jubilee Party has given the ruling outfit the green light to engage ODM on the possibility of forming a coalition ahead of the 2022 General Election.

In a meeting on Tuesday, the NMC and Jubilee Parliament leadership resolved to formally engage with ODM on potential areas of partnership as the country approaches the next General Election.

According to Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, the NMC approved the move owing to the good relationship Jubilee and ODM have had since the March 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“It’s noteworthy that in the last four years, while ODM has carried out its mandate as official minority party in the Senate and the National Assembly, the party has remain a reliable ally of the Jubilee Party in the passage of critical bills,” Tuju said as quoted by KBC.

Following the approval, the Jubilee party is expected to notify its other coalition partners of its decision. Currently, Jubilee has agreements with KANU and Wiper, which Tuju says he’ll soon write to them regarding the development.

Tuju also noted that he will inform other parties of the development and invite them to be part of the negotiations if they are interested. This, he argues will help unify the country and build national cohesion.

News of a potential Jubilee-ODM coalition emerged early this year after leaders from both parties met severally at a city hotel.

Reports indicate that President Kenyatta and Odinga also held a recent meeting I Mombasa to deliberate on the issue.
